The World Atlas Of Tattoo - Anna Felicity Friedman - Thames & Hudson

This is a comprehensive, art-historical survey of the history and contemporary practice of tattooing. Friedman is a historian of the tattoo with an acute sense of thematic evolution and its extrapolations which she traces across cultural and historical boundaries. The art of tattooing is shown as a profound meeting point of the visual and the bodily. It is the evidence of the body as canvas, as the site of pain transformed into communication, aide-memoire, testament and declaration. At a time in history when physical sensation is  being systematically degraded into visual approximation, the tattoo stands as an enduing exception in our retreat inward from our own skins. A reminder that things seen, are often better felt and transformed into actions.
